At the time of posting this, there are 39 tracks listed. I’d like to see this number grow. So if you have anything of interest, whether it be a composition, improvisation, or patch, do add it to the group. Providing it’s built with Csound, of course.

Sensing Angels

by Charles Gran
in three movements
for solo clarinet and electronics with improvisation

Performed by Jesse Krebs
Recorded Sunday, November 8, 2009

…Sensing Angeles was conceived as a solo piece in which the acoustic sound of the clarinet would be manipulated in real-time by a computer. Today, this isn’t so remarkable and can be achieved by a variety of means. For the project I chose to use Csound primarily as a challenge, but also for a certain kind of historical connection.

If the clarinet is an instrument with history so is Csound. A direct descendant of software created at Bell Labs in the 1950s[2], many would consider it antique in the same way the clarinet might be seen. Of course, it turns out they are both quite modern. Like most things, modernity is about use. Today, the use of a command-line interface and computer code for the creation of music is as much a point-of-view as a practicality…

Which means that starting yesterday, I will create ten things over ten days, and share it with the world. Here’s a repost from my entry from yesterday:

Single-Grain is a simple granular synthesizer/audio processor built with Max 5.

You can download the original Max 5 Single-Grain patches here. If you don’t own Max 5, but own a Mac, you can download the stand-alone application here. Mileage may vary.

July 28, 2008 @ NYC Resistor
1 Session, 3 hours, with personalized post-session project with instructor via email.
Cost $75

Csound is the most powerful computer music language in the world, with a direct lineage to Max Mathews’ original Music-N languages. The focus of this class will be a synthesis of three topics: The Csound language, synthesizer theory, and composing weird alien music.

Together, we will demystify the assembly-like syntax of the Csound language. We will cover the fundamentals of synthesizer theory, including: oscillators, filters, envelopes, amplifiers and modulation. Finally, we’ll tie it all together by composing sounds in the vein of classic Sci-Fi movies.

Taught by Jacob Joaquin (that’s me.) Click here to enroll.

From the official press release:

Several prestigious groups of musicians have donated their sound libraries to One Laptop per Child (OLPC), a non-profit organization focused on providing educational tools to help children in developing countries “learn learning.” The XO laptop’s unique user interface and applications enable children to create and share music, drawings, video, personal diaries and other things they make online with family and friends worldwide.

Leading musicians, colleges and companies making their sound libraries freely available on the XO laptop are: The Berklee College of Music in Boston, Berklee Music Synthesis alumni – including electronic music superstar BT, the international Csound Developer community, M-Audio and Digidesign (parts of Avid Technology, Inc.), and the Open Path Music group.

I want thank Dr. Richard Boulanger for all the time and effort he put into collecting and assembling such a vast and wonderful resource.

Here are my donated samples in three different sampling rates: baby talk plus eurorack, serge and csound synth sounds

Just got these tour dates in my inbox. Though I’m attending SXSW, it looks like I’ll be leaving before his shows on the 12th and 13th. Hey Saul, any chance of adding Fresno, CA to the list?
